How is the school accredited?
TIS has been accredited with Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) since 1992. It is currently fully accredited through June 30, 2022. WASC is an accrediting organization based in Burlingame, California, USA. In the fall of 2002, TIS was also accredited by the National Committee for Curriculum and Textbooks (NCCT), a Chinese government organization. TIS is registered with the Tianjin Educational Bureau and the state education commission and is a member of the East Asia Regional Council of Schools (EARCOS).
What qualifications do your teachers have?
All teachers hold a bachelor’s degree. Many of our teachers have earned or are currently in the process of earning a master’s degree.

Our teachers are from the United States, New Zealand, Korea, England, South Africa, and China.
What standards does the school follow?
Most of our subjects use the AERO (American Education Reaches Out) standards which are based on the Common Core Standards
How international are you?
approximately 57% are from South Korea, 22% from North America, and the remaining 21% from a variety of countries in Europe, Africa, Asia, and the South Pacific.

What is the school’s dress code?
TIS believes that appropriate dress and grooming contribute to a productive learning environment. Students have the right to make individual choices from a wide range of clothing and grooming styles, but they must not present a health or safety hazard, or a distraction that interferes with the educational process. Clothing and personal adornment styles change frequently and any “dress code” which explicitly defines acceptable school wear quickly becomes outdated. Specific details can be found in the student handbook.
Will my child be able to transition well to an international school?

Are parents encouraged to be involved at the school?
Absolutely! Parents are welcome at any time.
When can I visit the school?

Can you babysit my child after school?
No, students who are not involved in offered after school activities should go home at school dismissal.

How does the school communicate with parents?
We communicate with parents through a variety of outlets. Some communication channels include: phone, email, social media, etc.
What activities can parents get involved?
We have a special bus that brings parents to school on Wednesdays to participate in PTO (Parent/Teacher Organization) activities such as English class, Korean class, sewing class, etc.
Can you offer busing service to any location?
No. New bus stops will only be established at locations within Tianjin where three or more students can be picked up.
Do you have a swimming pool?
No, but we have a climbing wall

When I fill out the application form, what am I committing to?
Nothing. We use the application for information gathering purposes only. You can withdraw your application at any time if you decide not to come to TIS.
Is there a deadline for submitting my application?
There is no specific deadline for the application. We have rolling admissions.
What documents should I prepare for my child’s enrollment?
Two years or more of academic records, immunization records, and any additional helpful information.
Should all the application documents be prepared with an English notarization?
All documents should be translated in English.
How long does it normally take before I know if my child has been accepted to the school?
Parents will be notified within 48 hours after completing the testing process.
Does my child have to join the school on a specific date - the beginning of the school year, for example?
Not necessarily. We recommend students begin at the beginning of each quarter.
What are the admission level tests?
We currently use Measure of Academic Progress (MAP) as admissions testing for grades 4-12.
Do we need to come to the school for an assessment?
If my child fails the admissions test, when could they test again?
It is based on a case-by-case basis.
Is there a waiting pool?
Waiting pools are established as needed based on grade level capacity

Students must be at least three years old by September 30th of each year

If my child is very close the age cutoff date, can s/he be admitted to the grade I want?
Grade placement is not based on the age of the child.

Divisional principals will let you know what your child needs to be ready for school.

What degree do graduates earn from your school?
High school students will earn a high school diploma
Do you offer Advanced Placement (AP) courses?
Yes, we have 14 AP courses in high school.
My child isn't strong in their English abilities, will they be able to learn well in class?
Students who need support in English will be enrolled in a special support class.
Will my child go down a grade if their English isn't good enough?
In some cases, students are asked to repeat a grade

How do you prepare my child for college?
All students at TIS will be prepared for college.
What college entrance exams do you offer?
Students can take the SAT and ACT.
Will graduates be accepted to universities outside of china?
Absolutely. Our students are accepted to some of the top universities in Korea and America.
What activities are available outside the classroom?
After school clubs and activities are available for students from elementary through high school.
Do students have to take part in all of the after school activities?
No, students may choose in which activities they would like to participate
Where do students go after graduation?
Many students return to their home countries to attend university, but students are prepared to enter universities world-wide.
Will my child have the opportunity to learn how to play musical instruments?
Elementary students are exposed to many different musical instruments. All 5th and 6th graders are required to learn band instruments. From 7th grade on, students may choose to participate in band.
