New Student and Parent Orientation
Updated Sept. 4
We loved seeing all of our new students at NSO!
It was a great time on Monday being able to introduce the staff and the school to our new families. The parents got to hear from the Head of School and members of the PTO while the students went on a school tour and got to meet their individual principals and teachers. The rest of the day was spent getting everything from documents to student photos to officially start the school year!
Thank you to all our new students and parents for joining the TIS family! We look forward to working with and getting to know your families this year and many years to come.
Aug. 31

First Day of School
Updated Sept. 4
Happy first day of school!
The first day of school was unbelievable - every grade has returned to campus for the first time since January! It was such a sweet feeling to finally be able to see all of our students under the same roof again. While we couldn't really see anyone’s faces underneath their masks, we just know that everyone was smiling and eager to come to school! We certainly know all our teachers were!
While not all of our teachers are back on campus, the teachers abroad were still able to greet all of their students for the year and begin the year strong.
While this isn’t how anyone expected to start the new school year, we are encouraged by the upbeat attitude of the staff and students, and our teachers abroad receiving their PU letters and starting their journeys back to China.
This is going to be a great year, and we are excited to get to share it with you all! Let’s all make this a safe, healthy, and fantastic year.

First Week of School
We had a great first week of school. The students seemed excited to be back in the classroom. The first week of school always has many new experiences, some are welcome and some are more difficult. Encourage your children to talk to their teachers with their problems. In the middle school we work to teach problem solving techniques and these take time to develop. But teaching students to advocate for themselves, to talk to others for help and to seek assistance if there is a problem they can’t solve are all all valuable and very worth it.
Technology:
Now is the time to set limits and restrictions on device use in the home. Simply rejecting technology isn’t an option as it is a central part of our lives so parents need to learn to manage technology at home and to help their children learn to do the same. There are several ways we can support students in using their devices responsibly. Please consider:
- Keep devices public
- Keep Track of Time: After a certain time devices are turned off and put away.
- Do not allow the student to charge their devices where they can easily get to it without you knowing.
- Know passwords. Sit with them and have them show you their learning tools. Talk with them about them.
- Canvas
- PowerSchool
- OneNote or other note keeping program
- One thing at a time: discourage “Multitasking” when doing homework.
- Encourage uninterrupted rest/sleep. 6-13 year old children are recommended to get 9-11 hours of sleep a night.
Athletics:
On Wednesday an email was sent explaining this year’s soccer plan. Respond to Mr. Heimer if you want to be on the soccer team this year. Practices start September 15.
Lunch Cards:
Please make sure to keep money on your student’s lunch cards. You can find the balance, and items purchased, on PowerSchool.
Carrying Computers:
To keep laptops and iPads safer from harm, students are to carry their devices in padded cases with handles. Please make sure that your child has a case to avoid damage to the device. Students are responsible for computer repairs so let's keep the computers safe.
