Dear Parents,

Yesterday was Thanksgiving Day in the United States, and as I do each year, I reflected on things I am thankful for, and one of those things is the TIS community. The community has changed over the years, and I look back on each year fondly as there is always something to be thankful for no matter what is happening. I wish to share pictures with you of all the students and families that I have come to know over the years. However, there are too many, so I will share two pictures from 2005 and then spring of 2021.

This week the teachers were able to participate in our annual iSC Education Conference. The time we have together is an excellent opportunity for TIS teachers to learn new things that can help their growth in teaching. It also allows the teachers to share ideas and work with other teachers, which is always fun and a great time for collaboration.

My excitement is growing knowing that Mrs. McTaggart and Mrs. Musser will be joining us on campus on Monday, December 6. They will meet their students and get their first taste of who we are as a school. The current plan is to transition them into 1st and 5th grade classrooms, respectively, at the start of the new semester. If your child is in 1st or 5th grade, look for more information coming from me next week.

The next few weeks in elementary are going to be busy and exciting. One of the traditions at TIS is Christmas Concerts, and this year will be no different.

We are looking forward to sharing some traditional Christmas Carols and some new Christmas songs on December 10th. A detailed letter was sent to the elementary parents last week, and a letter will be sent to the ECC parents on Monday through Class Dojo.

Blessings,

Miss Barsalou

Secondary School

Greetings Parents,

I hope these last two days of no classes were helpful for your children to rest and be ready for the final push to the end of the semester. For all of you who celebrate the American Thanksgiving holiday, I hope it was a good time with family and friends with moments to reflect upon thankfulness and all your many blessings.

While the students were away, our secondary teachers spent Thursday and Friday in sessions with teachers across Asia, America, and Europe learning about community and instruction. Our annual iSC Education Conference is good for everyone to take time to reflect and discuss lessons learned, sharing their expertise with others while seeking to learn and grow. The last couple of days were very meaningful, and the conversations I had with my educator colleagues were motivating and undoubtedly will positively impact student learning.

The Science Fair on Wednesday was a success, and I hope the excellent presentations encourage more of the younger high school students to participate next year. Students worked for several months to design and test their hypothesis, culminating in their final presentations in front of a panel of judges. I had the opportunity to talk to some of the judges, and they were impressed by the quality of work and the ability of students to present their findings. Next week during the high school assembly, Mr. Lundy will announce the winners. Those individuals may have the opportunity to travel to Chengdu for the regional fair early next semester if travel permits.

A note about the end of the semester and final exams. Students will receive the final exam schedule next week; 7th - 12th graders will have their exams during the week of December 12. High school students may submit a form, signed and authorized by their parents, to arrive late or leave school early during those days, depending on their individual course testing requirements. Middle school students will have tests in accordance with their scheduled classes, and the experience is practice for high school assessments. Sixth graders don’t have final exams but may have a test or two to end their fall semester. 7th and 8th graders will have tests in some classes. For students in choir and/or band, their final exam is the concert. Everyone in the community is invited to come and enjoy their performance on the evening of December 4.

Lastly, we all await the arrival of the McTaggart family to Tianjin. Mr. McTaggart will be on campus and teaching classes next week, and he can’t wait to meet his students face to face. We also anticipate the arrival of Mrs. Cotton very soon.

Warmly,

Mr. Delzer
