School memories
School trips were part of my formative experiences at school. Going on spring trips and fall camps with the whole class, which I did all through middle and high school, were highlights. Those were the times to forge bonds with friends outside of an academic classroom.
Influential teachers
My teachers during my time at TIS have left lasting impressions. Jennifer Forney, my high school science teacher and who was also part of my caring community group, was a wonderful, wonderful human being.
Rebecca (Becky) Sardeson, my middle school English teacher, and Kimberly Hogsett, my band teacher, both of whom I went to Vietnam twice during summer service trips. Soon after graduating, I went with Becky and Kimberly to Cambodia and worked with all sorts of NGOs. I ended up visiting them again a couple of years after that as well, where I worked alongside them for two weeks to see the service project they had set up and were part of. From the time spent with them and seeing the commitment they had to their work in Cambodia, especially with children, who were sexual abuse survivors of child prostitution, really for me, was the inspiration to specialize in trauma. Both Becky and Kimberly were an inspiration to me with regards to what path I chose career-wise.
Advice to this year's graduating class
Invest in the relationships you have. What I really remembered from my last two years of high school was the focus on relationships: how are you going to say goodbye, how are you going to leave, leave all your friends and family behind and do it in a good way?
You don't need to be afraid to do that, even if you know that you might never see those people ever again. There are classmates that I was really close to that I've never seen again. But I think you need those relationships to make it through this stage in your life and to be able to build on those experiences in order to build up new ones and, in the future.
