Excellence in music.
Hi, my name is Emmy Chen and I am the band director at TIS. I have been teaching band and general music for over 14 years now. My primary instrument and favorite instrument is flute. I’m currently undertaking my masters of Music Education from VanderCook College of Music.
For me, music is a language that crosses boundaries and unifies people. Music also serves as a medium that gives people an opportunity to share their feelings, emotions, and character. With our diverse student body at TIS, music is an important plaform to build on their teamwork skills. All our students have the ability to play their individual instruments well, however, the real test is when they come together as a group. Band teaches students to challenge themselves, be disciplined, and learn the importance of working as a group in order to accomplish the same goal, producing wonderful music.
5th grade is where our students get their first taste of playing a variety of instruments. As they enter middle school, students strengthen their skills in their chosen instrument and have various opportunities throughout their middle school years to perform at various events and concerts. Students can continue developing their instrument and perfomance skills as they move into their high school years. We have a strong high school band program at TIS, highlighted by the selection of some of our students into the Association of Music for International Schools program each year.
