Secondary School

Dear Secondary Parents,

As we enter the final week of classes, I would like to share a bit about the end of the semester. In addition to final exams, students will participate in a school-wide Christmas Celebration on Friday morning, December 17. Following a brief time in classrooms to learn about the day and “Christmas around the world”, students will be dismissed to the first floor to participate in Christmas-themed activities. They will be dismissed at 11:20 a.m. to gather their things and to leave campus at 11:45 a.m. by bus or otherwise.

Friday evening, high school students who have purchased tickets will join together for the annual Christmas Banquet. This year the event will be at the Shangri-La hotel. The event begins at 6:00 p.m. and includes a meal, games, and performances by our students. This event will mark the end of our semester.

Final exams are next week for students in grades 7 – 12. These tests are comprehensive, encompassing the key content taught throughout the semester. In some classes, students will have a performance task to complete, and in other classes, they will write a more traditional exam. This assessment is 20% of their semester grade shown on their transcript.

The weekend and week leading up to final exams can be a very stressful time for our students. Sometimes students become very quiet and avoid interaction with others. Other students might respond to small matters with intense emotions. They may react to the pressure by looking like they don’t care about their exams, or they may attempt to not sleep, eat, or interact with others with their tests as an excuse. In this, I want to encourage you in this time how to support and encourage your children as they go into final exam week.

  1. Help them remember their value is much more than a score on a page.
  2. Help them sleep. Without sleep, their brains won’t function clearly, and they’ll make more mistakes.
  3. Help them remember to eat high-quality foods. Fast foods or foods high in fats and sugars do not support healthy brain function. Caffeine negatively impacts sleep.
  4. Help them understand there are no surprises on these tests. Expect students to score in the same range on their final exams as they do on a daily basis in the course.
  5. Final exams cover key points found throughout the semester – one night of study will not make up for four months of effort!

I hope this information is helpful and wish you a successful end of the semester!

Sincerely,

Mr. Delzer
