Long-term teachers and students share about TIS

This article was written by the partner organization, Study International. See the original article here.

Tianjin International School (TIS) turns 40 this year -- yet its drive to shape youths and encourage them to learn, love, and lead shines just as bright as it was in 1986, when it was founded.

Whether it’s taking a stand in Model United Nations, going on a service trip to places like Yunnan, Chang Bai Shan, and Chiang Rai, or competing in a volleyball tournament — each experience transforms the way TIS students approach learning. Tied with their skills and education, students are encouraged to explore how they can make an impact even before university. Hence why TIS Eagles study by the book, immerse themselves in activities that ignite passion, from robotics to the student council and the Fine Arts Festival, and prepare to make life-changing differences for the common good.

World-class learning, accredited teaching

To learn, love, and lead — that’s central to TIS’s philosophy as a LifePlus International School. From the campus to the people, every part of TIS is built to ensure students develop holistically as globally minded citizens. Its purpose-built campus houses the Early Childhood Center (ECC), Elementary, and Secondary divisions across three floors, with over 75 modern classrooms, two libraries, a STEM wing, and more. Last year alone, the school was home to 286 students from 18 countries. Faculty members are mainly from the US, but you’ll also find those from China, Brazil, New Zealand, Korea, and more.

There’s never a day that goes by where classrooms feel dull. Whether it’s the ECC students “learning through play” in safe, yet stimulating spaces, or the Secondary learners fostering their leadership skills, the school tailors the academic experience to support their growth and development at every stage.

As TIS adopts the American curriculum, these classes are taught in English. The school itself is Cognia-accredited, the global recognition a testament to TIS’s high standards of delivery, with teachers constantly evolving their practice to ensure students are learning from the best.

Hear from the teachers and students

Charles Schreur – Teacher and Photographer

Years spent at TIS: 35+

When China’s demand for English teachers surged in the 1990s, Charles Schreur didn’t hesitate. He’d been fascinated by China since his teens. So in the summer of 1990, he, his wife, and children packed up and moved. He’s never looked back since.

Having been part of TIS for over 30 years, he’s only seen the school grow. “From the 30 some students in 1990 to a sought-after educational option with well over 400 students was an immense change!” he says.

During Schreur’s time at TIS, he’s been a teacher, photographer, yearbook manager, and more. He’s worn many hats, yet teaching is undoubtedly what brings him the most joy. “That is when you not just transfer specific bits of knowledge or teach a skill, but instill ideas and shape character,” he says. “That is an intensely personal process in which teachers give something of themselves. Doing it well is what can be called ‘the art and heart of teaching.’”

For Schreur, the standout memory in all his decades here was a Spring Trip hosted with a group of ninth graders in Yunnan, where they visited a leper colony.

The students were so brave! They reached out to them, touched them, and we even had a meal there,” he says. “Compassion in action! And we listened to one of the people in the colony share his life story, embodying true joy and gratitude.”

Dani Beth Barsalou – ECC and Elementary Principal

Years spent at TIS: 21 years

Adventure has always been a driver in Dani Beth Barsalou’s life. Adventure is what would spur her move to China, as she’d always known — coming from Alaska, US — that she wanted to live in a foreign country and work with children.

“Starting as a teacher and having the privilege of moving into a principal role has given me a deep understanding of what it is like to be a teacher in such a great school,” she says. “It also helps me understand our students and their parents in a wonderful way. It is truly a blessing to serve such a wonderful community.”

As the ECC and Elementary Principal, Barsalou sees how TIS’s youngest students develop a love of “learning through play.” “We not only want our ECC and Elementary students to love learning, but also to learn how to love others and care for them as they would care for themselves,” she says. “Through our House system, it really builds a sense of belonging on top of the excellent academic education that our students receive.”

All students and their parents are sorted into and win points for one of four houses: Air, Earth, Fire, and Water.

As TIS celebrates its 40th anniversary, Barsalou sees the next 40 years filled with the teachers’ love for their students and dedication to excellence in education — as it’s always been. “Teachers truly care about their students and desire for them to do well and will go above and beyond for every student,” says Barsalou.

“I often hear from parents who have left TIS that their child misses the care and love that they felt at TIS and wishes they could come back to TIS as the teachers really love and care for their students.”

Zhang ZhengHan (Joseph)

Graduation year: Class of 2025

Joseph was born in South Korea, and is half-Chinese, half-Korean. He spent his youth growing up in Tianjin, China, and joined TIS, hoping to explore a global environment beyond what he was used to — with his sister, Zhang ZhengEn (Jessica), right by his side.

“Going to the same school not only strengthens the bond between siblings but also serves as an opportunity for personal growth for both of us as we serve as each other’s motivation to push ourselves to the best of our ability,” he says.

Joseph was first drawn to TIS for its vibrant, welcoming, and supportive community. He wanted to immerse himself in an environment where he could grow and thrive with a community, and he got to do just that as the tenor section leader in the school choir.

“While our group was small, consisting of only six people, our bond was so close to the point I started to view them like family,” he says. “Watching each one of them grow the courage to sing in front of a crowd, despite it being out of their comfort zone, truly was the most meaningful and fulfilling experience for me.”

While many teachers, mentors, and peers had a big impact on his journey, Joseph remembers Mr. Barta’s — the school’s science teacher and volleyball and soccer team coach — influence the most. “Through him, I learned many things about working as a team and being able to push yourself even when you think you are at your limit,” he says. “Applying the things I have learned from watching him has given me many opportunities for personal growth.”

Joseph is now attending the Handong Global University in Pohang, South Korea, and attributes his ability to get along with people from diverse cultures to TIS.

“The university I currently attend has a very large population of international students. However, I was able to quickly make a ton of friends thanks to my exposure to many diverse cultures at TIS,” he says.

Zhang ZhengEn (Jessica)

Graduation year: Class of 2027

Jessica’s entire life has been shaped by the TIS community, so much so that it feels like a second home. Attending school alongside her brother makes the TIS experience all the more special. “We’ve been able to support each other through challenges and celebrate our successes together,” she says.

There are many ways in which TIS has pushed Jessica to grow. “Academically, the teachers here have always encouraged me to push myself and stay curious. They’ve helped me build confidence in learning and asking questions,” she says. “Personally, being a part of such a supportive community has taught me the importance of kindness, persistence, and being open to new experiences.”

As a tight-knit community, traditions are a big part of bringing everyone together. “Events like sports tournaments and service trips really show the love and passion in our school,” she says. “Not only do we spend time together in school, but it’s always a tradition to have team dinners and class dinners outside of school.”

Community is also what forms Jessica’s greatest memories at TIS. Since joining, Jessica has fallen in love with soccer, and later, basketball. The community often comes together at sports tournaments, and that’s where she truly gets to witness TIS’s infectious school spirit.

“Graduating from this school makes me have different emotions,” she says. “I’ll definitely miss the teachers and friendships, but at the same time, I’m excited to see what’s ahead. Even though I’ll be moving on, TIS will always be a big part of who I am.”
