TIANMUN XIII in the books
Last week, TIANMUN XIII welcomed hundreds of students from around the country onto our campus to debate and find solutions to pressing events impacting groups around the world. This year’s theme was ‘Consensus Beyond Sovereignties,’ and had the perspectives of eight committees in collaboration over the posed topics.

The General Assembly committee – the largest committee – discussed four topics, ‘Measures to Mitigate East Asia’s Declining Fertility Rate and its Socioeconomic Consequences,’ ‘Measures to Strengthen Global Cooperation to Combat Climate Change and Achieve Net Zero Emissions,’ ‘Measures to Tackle the Worldwide Refugee and Migration Crisis through International Solidarity,’ and ‘Protecting Human Rights Amid Increasing Authoritarianism and Political Repression.’

Each of the seven other committees, the World Health Assembly, the Human Rights Council, the Disarmament Commission, the Economic and Social Council, the Environment Commission, the Advisory Panel, and the Security Council, also impressively tackled four topics over the three-day event. Of the topics for the World Health Assembly, one was ‘Efforts to Improve Childhood Nutrition and Combat Stunting in Vulnerable Communities.’ For the Human Rights Council, a topic discussed was ‘Policies to Combat Human Trafficking and Modern Slavery.’ One of the topics the Disarmament Commission debated over was ‘Measures to Strengthen the International Regulation and Oversight of Nuclear Weapons.’ The Economic and Social Council considered multiple points, including ‘Promoting Sustainable Economic Growth and Job Creation in South Asia’s Post-Pandemic Recovery.’ For the Advisory Panel, one of the topics was focused on ‘Measures to Mitigate the Impact of Climate Change and Natural Disasters in Pakistan.’ Finally, for the Security Council, it looked at strained situations in the four countries of Pakistan, Yemen, Afghanistan, and India.

While each of these topics heavily stretched our students through months of research, writing, and preparation, it also urged them not to shy away from difficult situations that must be addressed to support the vulnerable populations.
Well done to each of our students! Thank you to those who connected with other schools and led your peers through the process. Thank you also to Mr. James Delzer, who advised our students, and to our staff members who volunteered to support the thirteenth TIANMUN conference. Events like this give our students the opportunity to look beyond our community and consider how they can lend a hand to others.
