Why is MAP Testing Important?
Our final MAP Testing period begins next week. Each year, we have three windows of MAP Testing to assess the academic levels of students from our Kindergarten through tenth grade. Our first MAP Test session is at the very beginning of our school year in August. Our Principal of Teaching and Learning, Mr. Emmanuel Sarsalejo, explains, “That is our benchmark, or the baseline benchmark, for that academic year. And so, since that MAP Test is designed to monitor academic progress, we have to test somewhere in January and understand if there’s any progress, and design interventions and adjust strategies and instructions for teachers. At the end of the academic year, MAP Test happens during May, and so again, it helps us track the progress throughout the school year.”

The data collected, particularly if gathered over years of a student’s schooling, is invaluable, showing where they have progressed or, perhaps, regressed academically. With this data, schools, teachers, and parents have a path to collaboratively support students’ development. “For educators, it helps facilitate and differentiate instructions. For students, it helps them set academic goals. And for parents, it helps them understand their child’s learning progress. For schools, for us, this is very important because it allows us to evaluate how well our curriculum is supporting students’ learning and, of course, its effectiveness.”

Where learning gaps are identified, teachers can adjust their lessons, better addressing students’ individual learning needs. “Usually, there is a reflective learning process in which teachers are going through the MAP Scores with students,” explains Mr. Sarsalejo. “Teachers will provide some guidance on how they could set higher academic goals and guide them in formulating their SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound) goals.”

Research has shown that with this globally recognized testing process, schools that use data effectively, such as TIS, have reported students’ academic growth, “in fact, stronger growth over time.”
While students are not required to prepare, Mr. Sarsalejo says, “The most important thing to know [is] that MAP is designed to support learning, not to create pressure… just be prepared and ready to sit for the test, with sound mind, and sound body, and spirit.”
